Our Story
Throughout the 1990s Cornerstone Christian Centre in south London grew rapidly as a church and resource centre. It had supporting partnerships with many churches, ministries and interchurch projects across the UK and overseas, as well as a Bible school, ministers’ fellowship, well-publicised teaching conferences and a television department.
A planned change of leadership in 2007 saw these aspects of its work brought into a new charity, freeing Cornerstone to function more effectively as a local church. The partnership between the church and the charity remained strong for many years. Charis Communications is that charity.
In taking on these responsibilities, our objectives from the outset have been to:
- increase biblical literacy,
- developing effective leadership and
- enhance kingdom (i.e. church-growth) initiatives
and to do this in person, in print, on air, and online.
An early priority was to create a separate charity for Churches in Communities International, the mutual accountability network for churches and ministries that for ten years had been emerging from the Ministers’ Fellowship. We have retained a close relationship with this charity too.
Summary of present activities:
- maintaining an itinerant preaching programme,
- holding teaching conferences,
- producing television programming and radio contributions
- providing recorded teaching series for free through our hughosgood.com website
- releasing teaching content through YouTube, Spotify, Facebook and Instagram
- running Bible Academy as an online 12 module study course with an additional online interactive option
- producing video Bible studies with accessible notes, including an ongoing book-by-book, chapter-by-chapter series
- maintaining Charis House to publish books for students and art books for personal reflection
- providing personal mentoring, often in the context of enhancing kingdom initiatives
- providing consultancy advice for a wide range of city-wide and nation-wide initiatives
- releasing Mentoring Mondays weekly on various social media outlets
- creating and maintaining the YouthVids website that commends and collates Christian videos
- supporting initiatives in northern and southern Nigeria to increase church cohesion
- providing theological advice for a Christian film company
- maintaining close relationships with the EA; through its Council, but previously as an ACEA board member and the London coordinator
- fulfilling the Co-convenor’s role for the UK Charismatic and Pentecostal Leaders’ Gathering
Summary of past activities:
- working with the Charity Commission to produce standard governing documents for independent churches [this was pre-Charis but set the tone for much of our work]
- providing administrative advice to Christian Family Helpers in Uganda
- overseeing the MDiv programme for a Bible college in Pakistan
- lining up the initial visit of MV Logos Hope to London for OM in 2009
- chairing the board for the National Day of Prayer and Worship’s 2012 Wembley event
- assisting in the line up for the Crossing London Initiative in 2014
- providing comms for the Free Churches Group (2014-22)
- providing comms for CiC International (2007-22)
- fulfilling the Moderator’s role for the Free Churches Group (2014-22)
- fulfilling a national president’s role for Churches Together in England (2014-22)
- producing a book reflecting FCG/CTE experience, ‘Is Kindness Killing the Church?’
- speaking at numerous BGEA events [including ‘In Defence of Persecuted Christians’ in Washington in 2017]
- publishing in 2024 ‘Evangelical and African Pentecostal Unity’ [Hugh’s seminal PhD thesis, available academically since 2006] and distributing it to Bible Colleges
Current Focus:
Our executive lead, Hugh Osgood, has always had a passion for helping other people fulfil their God-given agendas, both when he was founding pastor of Cornerstone Christian Centre and as president of Churches in Communities International.
We are thrilled that Charis Communications is enabling him to do this more widely, and are excited that our media team has recently persuaded him to increase his mentoring effectiveness by sharing his own story of fulfilling his own God-given agenda over the years.
We now have a series of semi-autobiographical books [published by Malcolm Down], and a passion for benefitting younger leaders through podcasts and social media.
